CONSTRUCTION OF AN OSCILLATOR GENERATOR

CHAPTER ONE

1.1   INTRODUCTION

An oscillator generator (function generator) is a device which produces simple repetitive wave forms. Such device contain an electronic oscillator.

A circuit that is capable of creating a repetitive wave form (modern devices may use digital signal processing synthesize wave forms follow by a digital analog converter (DAC) to produce an analog output).

The most common waveform is a sine wave but saw tooth, step (pulse).

Square and triangular waveform oscillator are commonly available as are arbitrary wave form generator (AWGS).

If the oscillator operates above the audio frequency range (20HZ) the generator will often include some sort of modulation function such as amplitude modulation (AM).

Frequency modulation (FM) or phase modulation (PM) as well as second oscillator that provides an audio frequency modulation wave.

It generate a wide range of frequencies from 0.1Hz to 20MHz, the integrated circuit (IC) used for generating this waveform in this oscillator generator is the LM1458.

Waveform is generated by repeatedly charging and discharging of a constant current source, this produce linearly ascending and descending voltage ramp as the output voltage reaches upper and lower limit. 

 

1.2   PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this project is to show:

  • To show how the oscillator generator produces repetitive waveform.
  • To show how an analog generator produces since wave, square wave and triangular waveform.

 

1.3   OBJECTITVE OF THE STUDY

The specific objective of the project are:

  • To produce sine, square, triangular wave.

 

  • To design a oscillator generator that generate frequencies from (0.1HZ to 20MHZ)

 

1.4   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This oscillator generator generates wide range of frequencies from 0.1HZ to 20MHZ and it is analog oscillator generator. It generate sine, square and triangular waveform.

  

1.5   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

This project will be of great significance to electrical and electronic engineering student who choose to study in the field as it will serve as reference to those who will wish to carry out future research of this project.

 

1.6   LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

In construction of this oscillation generator, certain developments militated against its successful completion at the initial stage. These are:

  • Due to the erratic supply of power, the researcher had to wake up at night in order to construct this project since power was only restored at night.
  • Some of the component of the original design had to be change due to scarcity in market. 

 

1.7   DEFINATION OF TERMS

Signal:         In electronics, a signals is an electric current or electromagnetic field used to convey data from one place to another.

Generator:   A device used to produce square, saw tooth and triangular wave besides since wave.

Oscillator:    Is an electronic device that works on the principle of oscillation. It can also be a device for generating oscillatory electric current or voltages by non-mechanical means

Waveform: Is a representation how alternating current (A.C) varies with time or curve showing the shape of wave at a given time.

Modulation: Is the process of varying one or more properties of a periodic wave form caused carrier signal.

Sine wave: A fundamental waveform produce by periodic oscillation that express the sine or cosine of a linear function of a time or space.

Triangular wave: Is a periodic repetitive wave form that takes on it peak positive and negative excursion at a fixed point in time.

Square wave: A periodic wave which alternate between two fixed amplitude for equal length of time of transition between the amplitude being negligibly small.
