EVALUATION OF RADIO FREQUENCY RADIATION ROUND A RADIO AND TV TRANSMITTING BASE STATION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
The rise in wireless technology in Nigeria from 2001 to date, have posed several questions on the safety of the Radio Frequency (RF) radiated from radio and television base stations all over the world.
In Nigeria today the health risk of the radio frequency radiation emitted by radio and television transmitters had become an area of public concern since research had shown that, exposure to electromagnetic radiation within this range of frequency may be harmful to the human health.
Radio Frequency (RF) refers to all frequencies within the ranges 3KHZ to 300GHZ carrying radio signals. The transmission of these signals is rooted in Maxwell and Hertz work that has established in 1873 at the Maxwell’s equation for electromagnetic wave (EMW). The frequency (f) from the antennas, the speed of electromagnetic wave (c) and the wavelength (λ) are related by the expression;

Broadcasting transmitters, including AM and FM radio and television are common source of RF energy. The operating power of these transmitters varies greatly with some high-powered facilities reaching up to a megawatt of emitted power.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
A number of biological effect such as; cancer, mutation, cardiovascular disease etc. had been established as adverse health effect of acute exposure to radiofrequency radiation. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) have set exposure limit for this non˗ionizing radiation but often TV/ radio service providers and the public are unaware of the dangers of exceeding this limit. This research therefore becomes necessary in order, to evaluate the radio frequency radiation emitted by the radio and television transmitting base station.
1.3 AIM OF STUDY
The main aim of this study is to assess the level of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation emitted by radio and television transmitting base stations in line with the standard set by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and its effects on human health and the environment.
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives of this research are:
- To measured the RF radiation power density and electric field strength near the study area using Electro smog meter.
- Compare the measured values with the exposure limit set by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC).
- Review on and make recommendations to the general public on the health implication of high exposure to RF radiation.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Public concerns about the potential health effect of exposure to RF non-ionizing radiation stem partly from the pervasiveness of these exposure, and from sources of radio and television broadcasting common in industrialized country. Hence, this research is highly significance as it will create awareness on the health implications of high exposure to non-ionizing radiation.
1.6 SCOPE OF STUDY
This research work centered only on RF from TV/Radio Transmitter only.
